Creating Artificial Eyes and Facial Prosthetics: The Art Behind the Trade

Boston University College of Fine Arts alumni Kaylee Dougherty (CFA'11) works at Boston Ocular Prosthetics, Inc. where she hand-crafts prosthetic eyes, prosthetic ears, prosthetic noses, and other facial prosthetics. Dougherty recently earned certification as a clinical anaplastologist and is training to become a certified ocularist. As an ocularist, she creates artificial eyes for patients born without eyes or for those who have lost them to accident or disease. As an anaplastologist, she sculpts facial prosthetics for an array of patients. The goal is to match the prosthesis so precisely to her patient’s natural features that her artwork is mistaken for the real thing.
