Principle: Flame Photometry is a simple, rapid method for determining elements, particularly those that can be excited easily like alkali metals. When Na and K are atomized into a flame, their valence electrons are excited to a higher energy level. As these electrons return to their normal (ground state) energy level, they emit photons of light energy. It correlates the emitted radiation with the concentration of elements. A flame photometer consists of pressure regulator, flow meter for fuel gases, an atomiser, burner, optical system, a filter and a photo sensitive detector and an output display unit/ recorder. A solution of the sample is nebulized by a flow of gaseous oxidant (air/oxygen), mixed with a gaseous fuel and carried into a flame where atomization occurs.
