He is also the author of a splendid series of kids books about a Hank, the Cowdog, and a charming collection of critters and cowboys. There are 65 titles in the library, plus audio versions colorfully read by the author. Over a dozen years ago Kit Layborne optioned the rights to the property and worked with John Erickson to develop both a feature script and, from that, an animated series for the Nickelodeon. In collaboration with a team including Jeff Fino and John Hays (of the San Fracisco animation studio, Wildbrain), Mark Welch (of Austin's 501 Productions) and Evan Baily (of Nickelodeon's development staff) they worked up a unique production style that merged live-action footage of a real ranch and cel animated characters from the books. Nickelodeon invested in a feature length script. As often happens, an executive turn over at Nickelodeon/Paramount Studios, killed the project. But not before they completed some nifty production tests.
