Kentucky vs Minnesota | NCAA Women's Basketball | 12.6.23

LEXINGTON, KY -- The Minnesota women's basketball team hit a season-high 13 threes, shooting 59.1 percent from deep, on the way to a 76-57 win over the Kentucky Wildcats at Rupp Arena Wednesday. The Golden Gophers (8-1, 0-0 B1G) had three players score in double figures, led by Mara Braun, who had 25 points. Freshman Grace Grocholski added 15 points and two steals and Mallory Heyer helped out with 13 points and six rebounds. Minnesota shared the ball well in Wednesday's game, racking up 22 assists on 28 made field goals. Individually, Amaya Battle led the way for the Golden Gophers with six assists. The Minnesota forced 16 Kentucky turnovers while committing just 12. Those takeaways turned into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Niamya Holloway led the way individually for the Golden Gophers with two steals. How It Happened After falling behind 4-3, Minnesota went on a 7-0 run with 5:34 left in the first quarter to take a 10-4 lead. The Golden Gophers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 17-16. Minnesota fought back to tie the game at 20-20 before going on a 7-0 run to take a 27-20 lead. The Wildcats then came roaring back to take a 38-36 lead heading into halftime. Minnesota came out of halftime on fire, going on an 11-0 run, punctuated by a three from Heyer, to grab a 47-38 lead with 6:30 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Wildcats had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Golden Gophers still entered the fourth quarter with a 56-49 edge. Minnesota knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 20 total points. Minnesota kept widening that lead, expanding it to 63-50 before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Grocholski's three, to grow the lead to 72-50 with 4:41 to go in the contest. The Wildcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Golden Gophers still cruised the rest of the way for the 76-57 win. Minnesota fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 20 points. Game Notes » The Golden Gophers scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to retake the lead for good after trailing by two at halftime. » The Golden Gophers held the Wildcats to only 39.6 percent shooting from the field. » Mara Braun extended her consecutive free throws made streak to 36, which is now the sixth longest streak in Big Ten history. » Grace Grocholski and Mara Braun each knocked down five threes, both tying their career high. » Braun's 25-point night is her 13th game with 20 or more points, the Gophers are 10-3 in those games. » Amaya Battle had just three turnovers, moving Minnesota's record to 10-3 when she commits three of less turnovers in her career.
