Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad - Part 3: The PRR Main Line

The Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad is a 190 mile long short line railroad operating on former Erie Railroad trackage between Hornell, NY and Meadville, PA. A 90 mile long branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad's former Buffalo Line between Machias, NY and North Driftwood, PA was added to the railroad's mileage in the late 2000s. The railroad is most notable for it fleet of immaculate ALCO and MLW locomotives, some of which are due for retirement in 2019. Though the railroad is owned by the parent company Livonia, Avon & Lakeville, the railroad has its main office in Olean, NY, the point where the Erie and PRR mainlines intersect. Over two trips to the railroad, one in December, 2015 and another in June, 2018, I spent some time exploring this quaint, railfan-friendly railroad, spending time checking out the action in the yard, a short section of the west end of the Erie main, and a section of the former PRR main south from Olean. In this final segment, we follow the former PRR Buffalo Line south from Olean into Pennsylvania over the grade of Keating Summit. This is the most sought after and most photographed portion of the WNYP and was made famous in 2010 by the 20th Century Fox film 'Unstoppable', which was filmed between Eldred and Driftwood. Notable locations include Eldred, Turtlepoint, Port Allegany and Emporium. Enjoy, subscribe and thanks for watching!!
