USS Lexington Museum: A History of Service and Sacrifice

The USS Lexington is a decommissioned aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, now permanently moored as a museum ship in Corpus Christi, Texas. An Essex-class carrier, she was the second ship to bear the name, and was originally named Cabot. The ship was renamed while under construction to commemorate the recently-lost USS Lexington. Lexington was commissioned in February 1943 and saw extensive service through the Pacific War. For much of her service, she acted as the flagship for Admiral Marc Mitscher, and led the Fast Carrier Task Force through their battles across the Pacific. She is the oldest remaining fleet carrier in the world. She was the first aircraft carrier in US Naval history to have women stationed aboard as crew members. She participated in nearly every major operation in the Pacific Theater during World War II. She sank or destroyed over 300,000 tons of enemy shipping. She was awarded 11 battle stars for her service in World War II.
