June 8, 2004 - The Los Angeles Lakers began the 2003-04 season on a 19-5 run through their first 24 games. Then, early in the first quarter of a Dec. 21 contest against the Phoenix Suns, Suns center Scott Williams got his feet tangled up with Karl Malone following a clumsy closeout, leading to Williams awkwardly falling on Malone along the sideline. The result: a torn MCL for Malone and 39 missed games due to injury, 33 more than he missed in his first 18 seasons combined. Averaging 14.5 points and 9.9 rebounds prior to injury, Malone inched back into form as the 2004 playoffs approached. Alas, after averaging 13 and 9 through his team's postseason foray through the Western Conference, Malone's season (and career) effectively came to an end midway through Game 2 of the NBA Finals when he tweaked and subsequently reinjured his right knee after clipping teammate Derek Fisher's foot. Malone soldiered through Game 2 despite the injury, playing 39 minutes and finishing with 9 points and 9 rebounds in an overtime victory. His on-court effectiveness was limited for the remainder of the series, culminating in sitting out the final game of his NBA career, a championship-clinching Game 5 win for the Detroit Pistons.
