Howard Ain recalls covering the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire 40 years ago

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The 40th anniversary of the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire is May 28, 1977. 165 people were killed and hundreds were hurt at the Southgate business. Howard Ain covered the tragedy. Howard told John Lomax how he was at a policeman's house and that officer was hearing about the fire on his radio. Howard quickly went to WKRC TV, grabbed a production assistant and went to the scene. At that time, the station just had its first live truck put into use. However, they quickly found out they could have a good TV picture or a bad TV picture with sound. Howard quickly realized that he could talk live using a walkie talkie. They reported on the fire all night until 3:30 a.m. Howard first reported on the fire from the bottom of the hill, where it was difficult to get information and realize how devastating the fire was. A funeral director told him more than 100 people had died and that's when Howard made his way up to the top. Nothing could have prepared him for what he saw outside the Supper Club. "I saw just a row of people laid out on the hillside, 99 I think I counted. In most cases, they just a napkin or something over their face. You could see they were in their suits, their fine dresses and they were just laid out like that." The enormity of the fire hit him and Howard had to hand reporting over to a reporter from WKRC radio. While we now know about PTSD, they didn't then and Howard believes he likely suffered from it. The story didn't end that night. Howard covered it for years, documenting the court cases. The fire was ruled to be electrical due to aluminum wiring. The fire led to changes in requirements for exits in businesses. There must be enough, they must be clearly marked and lead quickly to outside. All were problems at the Supper Club. A memorial service will be held on the anniversary from 2 - 5 p.m. at the bottom of the hill in the 525 Medical Center parking lot.
