It’s all about gestalt! Well, what is gestalt? Gestalt psychologist Kurt Koffka once said, “the whole is other than the sum of its parts,” and that applies to songs as well as most works of art. Development is not just about the traits of any one idea—its shape, color, size, etc. Development is about the whole, the shape, the gestalt. This form is different for each different arrangement of these specific ideas. It emerges as the structure that contains the ideas. The ideas are contained by the structure, and the idea is expressed through the structure. In music, for example, the message of a song isn’t only contained in its lyrics, but in a whole myriad of elements—chord qualities, instrumentation, sound design.
