Beethoven 9 at St John the Divine NYC, transcribed and played by David Briggs

Beethoven 9 at St John the Divine NYC, transcribed and played by David Briggs What an incalculable privilege it was to present a new Beethoven 9 transcription, here at St John the Divine, last Tuesday. In a curious way, probably rather an historic event. Here’s the complete performance, preceded by a Q&A (replete with 🇬🇧 gags!) between me and Kent Tritle, our wonderful Director of Cathedral Music for the past ten years, and a very lovely introduction by our Dean, The Very Reverend Clifton Daniel 111. It was actually deeply moving to see the cathedral so full again, after all these months. That’s in additional to the thousands of Angels that have been ever-present, during this rather extended human lockdown. Somehow the presence of the ambulance sirens, on neighboring Amsterdam Avenue, near the beginning of the First Movement, seemed doubly appropriate and had a rather symbolic resonance - our concert is dedicated to the many thousands of health care professionals in NYC and beyond, who risked their own lives to help others, particularly in the early days of Covid-19 when the hope of a vaccine still seemed like a far-off dream. So many thanks to our four fabulous soloists, Susanna Phillips, Kirsten Sollek, Bernard Damon Holcomb and Joseph Charles Beutel, the wonderful choir of St John the Divine, and not forgetting timpanist-extraordinaire Ben Herman, who worked his incomparable magic in the Scherzo, not to mention Triangle/Suspended Cymbal in the ‘Turkish March’ in the Finale. And to my friend Kent Tritle, for holding us all together. ‘Yay’ for live music. This was an evening filled with so much joy - and communal gratitude. You could almost touch it. I hope you can sense that, in this film! Thank you, Mr Beethoven, for allowing us a glimpse into your inner world, especially in your most amazing slow movement, which seems to enable us all to explore our deepest individual emotional depths, rather like a tool to probe what we were all given as a unique birth right. 🥰🎶.
