She is commonly shown as a massive sentient larva (caterpillar) or imago, accompanied by two small fairies, the Shobijin, who speak on her behalf. Unlike other monsters, Mothra is primarily a heroic figure, having been shown as a defender of her island civilization, the Earth, and Japan. The character is often depicted hatching offspring (in some cases, twins) when approaching death.
