Understanding the mutations behind colorectal cancer | Dr Kate Marks

Dr Marks is researching how to diagnose colorectal cancer earlier by investigating mutation rates in the normal bowel mucosa. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer type in the UK, and the key to improving outcomes is early diagnosis. For patients diagnosed with Stage 1 disease the five year survival rate is 95%, however with patients diagnosed with Stage 4 disease the five year survival rate falls to just 5%. This need for quick diagnosis has been a key reason for the introduction of the bowel cancer screening programme. Dr Marks is researching potential future methods for even earlier detection by investigating mutation rates in colonic crypts contained in the colorectal epithelium. Her work uses a new technique of staining with X-chromosome-linked proteins to identify crypt mutations. Her research found that people with cancer had a higher background mutation rate than healthy people. Going forward, Dr Marks aims to work with collaborators to use deep learning algorithms to speed up the research process. Working with an expanded sample, she aims to investigate how distance from tumours impacts mutation rates and also the role of partial mutations. Dr Kate Marks is an academic histopathology trainee at the University of Leeds. Our Clinical Academics in Training Annual Conference, or CATAC, offers early career researchers the chance to present work and receive feedback from senior panelists in a truly interdisciplinary setting. The conference gives clinical academics the chance to meet people from all areas of biomedical science, and share ideas from many different perspectives. This presentation, 'An assessment of the mutation rate of normal colorectal epithelium in patients with cancer compared to patients without', won the Post-Doctoral Plenary Competition at CATAC 2018.
