Beyond Licola Part 2 - Moroka Road: Arbuckle to The Pinnacles

Part 2 features McFarlane’s Saddle, Miller’s Hut, Moroka Hut, Old Moroka Road, Horseyard Flat, Moroka Gorge, The Pinnacles and more. Moroka Road (and Pinnacles Road) is a 44-kilometre drive from Arbuckle Junction where part 1 finished. It is all rough gravel but with plenty to see and do if you are willing to explore away from the road. In 1915, World War 1 prevented the area from being opened to land selection and tourism when work on a new road from Briagolong to Moroka was abruptly terminated. It was not until the 1950s that the road was finally completed to enable timber harvesting. Today, the main traffic using Moroka Road, Old Moroka Road and tributary roads and tracks are leisure vehicles seeking out an a remote adventure. Despite the number of visitors, the area is still remote and road conditions can change dramatically with weather and heavy use. It is imperative to let someone know before you go venturing into this high-altitude wonderland. Road conditions when I last followed the road in 2024 seemed reasonable for 2WD vehicles apart from the final ascent to The Pinnacles via Pinnacles Road. This section would have been quite testing for most 2WD vehicles. This is the second in a series of three slideshows showcasing history and some scenic attractions of the area beyond Licola. #licola #moroka #mtwellington #pinnacles #horseyard #millershut #arbuckle What to Expect: 0:00 Start 0:12 Location map (Hema High Country – Old edition) 0:27 Mount Arbuckle & Arbuckle Junction 0:41 Warning signs 0:59 Surveyors Creek Forestry Camp 1:12 McMillans Walking Track 2:05 McFarlane Saddle 2:18 McFarlane Hut ruins 1928 2:28 Walking Tracks 2:57 Dunsmuir Hut 3:13 Riggall’s Old Hut 3:32 Miller’s Hut 4:05 Miller’s Razorback Pack Track 4:43 Mount Wellington 5:32 Goldie – Wild Bob Goldie 5:52 Goldie’s tumble 6:27 Air rescue 7:15 To Moroka Hut 7:46 Old Moroka Road 8:43 Moroka Hut 9:20 Horseyard Flat 9:36 Brumbies Yard 10:23 Horseyard Flat Camping Area 10:34 A convenient convenience 10:48 Thank you Macalister 4WD Club 11:02 Horseyard Flat Hut 11:33 The old bus 11:52 To Moroka Gorge 12:08 Intentions book 12:26 Placid Moroka River 12:37 First Falls 12:53 Artist’s impression 1865 13:09 To the Pinnacles 13:26 Pinnacles Car Park Picnic Area 13:34 Two warnings 13:49 Fire spotter’s amenities hut 14:01 Up to the first pinnacle 14:39 The tower comes into view 14:53 The view on a clear day 15:15 Up we go again 15:25 The first lookout c.1960s-1987 15:41 The second lookout 1987-2006 16:00 The Eagle’s Crest & Hubbard’s stock route 16:17 Billy Goat Bluff through smoke haze 16:31 No! - I think I will turn back Music: - Lizzy McAlpine – ‘To The Mountains’.    • Lizzy McAlpine - To The Mountains (Of...   - Rex Dallas – ‘The Cattleman’s Hut’.    • The Cattleman's Hut   - Anne Kirkpatrick & Troy Cassar-Daly – ‘You Ain’t Going Nowhere’.
