The book of Ruth is a complex book made up of interwoven layers of meaning. Structurally, it is symmetric with exactly seventy-one Hebrew words in both the introduction and the conclusion followed by an epilogue which establishes the lineage of David, and ultimately, Yeshua. The literal content is a story of the redemption of one family by their kinsman redeemer. Metaphorically, this points to Yeshua who is our kinsman redeemer. Historically, Ruth fits into the overall narrative of the time of the judges of Israel. Within the background of a famine and restoration at the time of the barley harvest, it is an account of both the curses and the blessing that are the result of whether Israel disobeyed God or followed His precepts. Finally, the names in this account are a metaphor of the emptiness and futility of our lives without God the Father and Yeshua the Son.
