The term “reverse pivot” has been around in golf for as long as anyone can remember. But what does it actually mean? And why is it viewed in such a negative way? The term “reverse pivot” seems to broadly describe the body weight of a golfer moving too much towards the target in the backswing, then moving away from the target in the downswing and follow-through. This goes against traditional wisdom that the golfer’s weight should shift away from the target on the backswing, then towards the target on the downswing and follow-through. I would strongly argue that neither of these options is optimal, nor is it what the best player’s do. Stack & Tilt prescribes a centred turn in the backswing (no shifting of the weight back or forward), followed by a progressive shifting of the lower centre (hips) towards the target throughout the downswing and follow-through. This is the pattern demonstrated by the best players in the game as it helps them to control the number 1 fundamental - CONTACT. The less skilled golfer struggles to control contact because they never fully learn or understand how far FORWARD their weight needs to be to be successful.
