A Pennsylvania Dutch Childhood: Remembering My Life on the Farm in the 1930s and 40s

A full tour of the Schneck barn can be seen here:    • Then and Now: A Tour of the Pennsylva...   Paul Schneck is a seventh-generation Schneck born in 1931. In 2021 at age 90, he recalls his Pennsylvania Dutch childhood growing up on his parents' 50-acre farm in Rising Sun, a hamlet in North Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Paul experienced the transition from horse-drawn farm equipment to tractors, and also witnessed the adoption of electricity and indoor plumbing. Paul's childhood home was a mid-1700s two-story German log house built on land originally owned by the Schlosser family. In the 1700s, the Schlosser family owned hundreds of acres in Rising Sun and Neffs. They donated the land for the establishment of Union Church in Neffs, where Paul and his ancestors worshiped. (The Schnecks were Lutheran.) The log house was dismantled in 1990 by Ken Muth, an architectural preservationist. Ken beautifully restored the log house on his property in nearby Orefield, returning the house to its original one-and-a-half-story height. #risingsunpa
