Forest floors are rich, covered with life through numerous layers of mulch, fallen leaves, broken branches and wildlife. Nature never needs bags of compost, man made fertiliser or bags of mulch yet they are some of the most fertile environments on this planet. If we are able to mimic natural environments, and more specifically forest floors then we, too, can build healthy, fertile soil that can feed soil life, boost plant immunity and provide balanced, healthy growth. The greatest challenge in urban spaces is creating self-sustaining ecosystems. However, urban spaces offer the opportunity for community and to pool resources, like fallen leaves, to get free natural resources to build up soil. Using many different home composting techniques we are also able to reduce food waste and turn it into high quality compost to go back into the garden.
