Why Zeiss makes the best lenses.

0:00 - Opening 1:04 - Specs 3:03 - The "Zeiss" Look 5:54 - Intermission 6:50 - Conclusion 9:18 - Tech Info, Credits, End Dear Ghosts, Please bear in mind that since I am using a full frame lens on a super35 camera, I had to convert the apertures to full frame. There might be some slight error because f1.4 on full frame is around f1.0 on APSC and when selecting aperture on the xh2s my camera only returned s35 apertures. For this video I wanted to try something a bit different. As usual, YouTube compression obliterates dark footage and particularly makes it really hard to display the smooth bokeh on this lens, but you can still get a good feel for it in the stills. I can’t wait to revisit this lens for video when I upgrade cinema camera later. Vimeo if you want better quality: https://vimeo.com/860631112?share=copy For anyone not used to this focal length, I really prefer landscape orientation and getting some distance between the subject. For photos try to crop out a bit to appreciate the depth. I suggest trying f1.4 for a dreamy look, f1.8-2.8 for a professional look. Video, I really like f5.6 to f8 and f1.4 when I’m feeling ambitious. f2.8 & f4 are also decent. These are all full frame terms, so just go up a stop of light if you want to follow my advice for super35 cameras. F1 - 1.4 - 2 - 2.8 - 4 - 5.6 - 8 Although this lens is clean, I still argue it has character. The bokeh can be swirly, out of focus areas bloom with light, purple fringing is exists, focus fall off, and it doesn’t necessarily FEEL sharp because of the roll off. I don’t think clean and clinical are necessarily mutually inclusive characteristics, the roll off makes it very cinematic. It really is an artistic lens at f1.4 - it took me a few weeks to figure out how to capture images with this and appreciate the images. It’s an acquired taste, but if you can, give it a go. If you can’t afford it, the milvus line is nearly as good. That being said, although the lens is 4000USD retail, you can definitely hunt for used copies for 2000USD, i bought mine new around $2500 but thats just the nature of the Chinese marketplace. Finally, the lens isn't weather sealed, but it's not as delicate as it sounds, I've shot with the Otus lenses in the rain and the desert and as long as you don't expose it too much you could be fine, though the downfall of this lens would surely have to be dust and sand through the focus ring.
