Major General George Gordon Meade's Army of the Potomac and General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia met at the Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. After three days of fighting, that town would be the site of the bloodiest battle on American soil and the bloodiest battle in American History. Day one saw Confederate forces capture the town, but Union forces would fortify the hills and ridges outside of the town. A. P.
