Xi Jinping Xi Jinping (/ˌʃiː dʒɪnˈpɪŋ/ xi-jin-ping; Hanzi: 习近平; Pinyin: Xí Jìnpíng, [ɕǐ tɕîn pʰǐŋ]; born June 15, 1953) is the General Secretary of the Communist Party, 7th President, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China. He is also the General Secretary of the CCP Politburo Standing Committee. On November 15, 2012, after a vote in a parliamentary meeting in Beijing, he was elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of China. Jinping is the son of communist veteran Xi Zhongxun (1913-2002), and started most of his political career in Fujian province. He was later appointed party chairman in the neighboring province of Zhejiang, and subsequently was also appointed party chairman in Shanghai following the dismissal of Chen Liangyu. Jinping is known for his tough stance on corruption and his openness regarding political reform and market economy in the PRC. His position in Chinese politics makes him the fifth successor, succeeding Hu Jintao, as General Secretary and supreme leader of the Chinese Communist Party. Xi Jinping stated that he would use his leadership to rejuvenate the People's Republic of China's economy, along with six other top party members, including new members Li Keqiang and Wang Qishan. Seven members of the "Politburo Standing Committee" group and several other organizations predict that under his leadership, China will be less progressive.
