St Mary's Hospital MRI scanning department are one of the very few hospitals in the UK using the innovative whole body diffusion-weighted whole-body (DWIBs) scanning technique as a direct replacement for the whole body nuclear medicine we previously used. This scan is used to assess the spread of cancer and metastasis at the start of diagnosis and also during and after treatments. Patients are now spared from travelling to the mainland and can have the scans performed on site at the same time as other scans such as CT. This saves further time and expense, and a more accurate and higher quality scan and diagnosis is now available, aiding the planning of treatment. Waiting times are shorter, and with a scan time of 30mins can be slotted into a patient’s normal daily schedule, with scan times on all week days, some weekends, and evenings, giving greater flexibility for patients. The use of this technique has resulted in amazing changes for the better in patient care.
