Class 45 Peak 45118 Returns to the Mainline!

In this video, we capture Class 45 Peak 45118 The Royal Artilleryman as she returns to the mainline for the first time since she was withdrawn in May 1987! Fast forward 37 years later to May 2024 and she would be returning to the mainline to become the first Class 45 to run on the mainline since 45112 The Royal Army Ordnance Corps in 2007! We begin the video at Barrow Hill where we capture the Peak moving on mainline metals for the first time in 37 years and the first mainline moves of a Class 45 since 2007 as she powers away sounding brilliant on her way from Barrow Hill LIP to Worksop Down Yard hauling Class 40 D213 Andania & Class 37 37409 Loch Awe. We then see 45118 passing Slitting Mill, near Staveley still powering away from Barrow Hill in the lovely scenery. We move into South Yorkshire to Swallownest, near Woodhouse on the outskirts of Sheffield where we capture the brand new Class 93 93001 on it’s 2nd day of doing test runs heading from Worksop Down Yard to Sheffield. Moments later we capture 45118 propelling 37409 & D213 after switching ends at Woodhouse. After Swallownest we headed to Kiveton Park capture 93001 returning from Sheffield to Worksop Down Yard, afterwards 45118, D213 & 37409 pass through unfortunately however the convoy was held up by a Northern Lincoln Central to Leeds service due to the move being 6 mins early. After a quick dash to Sothall, near Beighton as we see the Peak propelling the convoy once again switching end at Woodhouse where slows up to the signal behind the bridge due to a Class 66 LE move passing through a few mins before she thrashes away from Beighton Junction with the signal turning green where once again she founded fantastic. Just under 2 hours later we return into Derbyshire to Slitting Mill to capture the 45 down at the crossing now heading from Barrow Hill LIP to Crewe HS via Sheffield & Derby as she passes in the sunlight heading northbound. After Slitting Mill we capture The Royal Artilleryman making a stop at Chesterfield whilst arriving 32 mins early to late let various passenger services to pass it whilst it was looped making her the first Peak to stop at Chesterfield in a very long time. For the final shot of the day we see 45118 rejoining the Midland Mainline as she heads southbound towards Derby in her former home territory sounding brilliant once again to end off a fantastic day! Overall, the thought of seeing Peak again on the mainline years ago was something that could only be dreamed of but all thanks to Jeremy Hosking & Locomotive Services Group for making this possible. It truly was a day I had been wishing for and looking forward to nearly my whole life having remembered seeing 45112 when I was 5 years old in 2007 in Chesterfield. It really was fantastic to see a Peak on the mainline again and I’m still finding it surreal to know that a Class 45 has returned to the mainline and we will certainly look forward to seeing 45118 hauling railtours in the future after her successful mainline test runs!
