Demand Respect He attended Fort Hare University and the University of Witwatersrand, where he studied law. 2. Prove them wrong He became involved in anti-colonial politics, joining the ANC. 3. Use your time wisely Influenced by Marxism, he secretly joined the South African Communist Party. 4. Don't worry about labels In 1962, he was convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the state, and sentenced to life imprisonment. 5. Be humble He served 27 years in prison. An international campaign lobbied for his release. 6. Have heroes He joined negotiations to abolish apartheid and establish multiracial elections in 1994. 7. Take a stand He was the country's first black chief executive. 8. Manage your emotions He also created the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses. 9. Be willing to die for your cause He was Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999. 10. Speak with conviction He received more than 250 honours, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.
