Understanding humor in a foreign language is a big challenge for a student. You can understand vocabulary, grammar structures and still not get a joke. Why? Simply put: Context and culture. If you’re not familiar with current events going on in a country or community where people speak that language you won’t get it. If you’re not familiar with multiple meanings and uses of one word, you won’t get it. And if you just don’t know anything about the culture of the people who speak the language, you just won’t get it. Take Spanish memes (in this case), for example. Simple. Short, yet not that easy to get even for intermediate-advanced students.
