My dad gave it to me, it was laying around in his old barn for a long time. These Graters were made between ~ 1880 and 1930. Its got 2 "modes" - if you turn it right ways, it grates rough, if you turn it left ways, it grates more fine. It worked very well, but had some bad noises when using, and the wooden handle didnt spin anymore. Time to restore this beauty! I started with disassembling all the wood and metal parts, and gave them a nice wash. The grinding wheel was a little bent, so i made it round again using a hammer and piece of wood in my vise. After the rough metal work was done, i disassembled the handle by using a angle grinder. Before sandblasting the parts, i removed the most of the paint from the main grinder body, because i didnt want to have the paint in my sandblasting cabinet. Of course the next step was sandblasting all the rusty parts. The next step was filing all the surfaces from the main body smooth, because i didnt want to add a too thick layer of bodyfiller. After filing was done i sanded the filingmarks away with an 80 grit, before attaching the bodyfiller. When the filler was dried, i also sanded it with from p80 to 320grit. Now the parts are ready for the new paintjob. I applied 2 coats of wet in wet primer, before spraypainting the parts with "flamered" spraypaint. After drying the parts turned out very well. The inner areas of the main body were painted with a food compatible paint, which is called "Kelterlack". While drying, the handle bolt and the graterdrum got nickel plated in a nickelbath with electrolysis. The small screw, which holds the handle to the graterdrum got blued. i heated it to around 300 degrees celsius and quenched it in olive oil afterwards, it turned out nice black and rustproof. The wooden handle got sanded on a drill, after that i applied wood oil on it for better protection and a nice finish. All parts were ready for reassembly now. After reassembly, i tested the Grater with Cashew Nuts and Almonds. Because of a missing wood block, i used an empty botttle to push the nuts into the grater. The result is great and ive got a new tool for my apartment :-) Thanks for watching!
