During the summer of 1942, the German Army advanced towards the Caucasus region in the Soviet Union to occupy the oil-fields, gain natural resources and weaken the Soviet resistance. They set out to capture the strategically important city of Stalingrad on July 17 1942. The city, in and around it, fiercely defended by the Soviets and shrouded in symbolism, became the core of a brutal struggle between the two military giants. The battle was won on February 2nd 1943. It's estimated that both armies combined suffered nearly 2 million casualties, which means that more men died in Stalingrad than during entire wars. - I apologise if some segments of the video seem pixelated, especially during the end-scene and during 7:16.
