How A.R.Rahman's Uyire taught me to listen to bass | Bombay | Tu Hi Re

A strange booming pattern of noises from a distant neighbor, makes Su Krish curious. She discovers that it's the bass line of the "Uyire" song, composed by A.R. Rahman, from the film "Bombay" (directed by Mani Ratnam). But why is only the bass sound heard from across the street? Curiosity leads her to experience and discover the muffling effect on music. The unique bass line of this song drives her exploration. When music travels through objects, across distances, high frequency sounds are absorbed and stopped by those materials. Only the low frequency sounds of the bass reach the ears. This gives that characteristic muffled sound or "distant" sound or "next room" sound. This is also what makes the music coming out from cars seem to have a very prominent "booming" bass portion.
