Raag Charukeshi | Tu Hi Re | Uyire

Let’s begin this journey of "Music and Mindfulness with Vinod" with an exploration of Raag Charukeshi. Raag Charukeshi, an enchanting raga, is from the Carnatic music tradition that has fairly recently made its way into Hindustani classical music. It is a sampurna raga - comprises all seven notes (swaras) in its aaroh (ascent) and avroh (descent). Dhaivat (Dha) and Nishadh (Ni) are komal (flat notes) svaras while all other svaras are shudhha (major notes). This raga has shades of Raag Darbari and Raag Bhairav in its challan. Being a relatively recent inclusion in the Hindustani tradition, the Raag leaves a lot of room for interpretation. With a mix of major notes in the Poorvang (first half of the octave) and flat notes in the Uttarang (second half of the octave) this Raag can evoke a spectrum of emotions for the listener. And I invite and encourage you all to explore different colours, textures, and emotions as Raag Charukeshi unfolds, followed by renditions of "Tu Hi Re" from the Hindi movie Bombay and its Tamil version "Uyire" which are based in the same Raga.
