People in the Middle East may look at American culture and disapprove of the way parents allow teenagers to spend time away from home unsupervised. You might think it's OK with Americans for their children to party, smoke and have many boyfriends/girlfriends. But it's not. Parents in America and the Middle East have the same goal for raising kids. We want them to grow up to live a just, healthy and moral life. But we accomplish this in very different ways. Parents in the Middle East keep their kids from going astray by restricting their options. The whole neighborhood has a collective eye on young people to make sure they don't have any chance to do something bad. We don't have the same type of monitoring in America. If kids want to do something "bad," they can. Our strategy is to teach them WHY something is right or wrong, so that they have the strength and knowledge to make the right decisions on their own when no one is watching. We want the discipline to do the right thing to come from inside, not outside.
