I think that the Monkey Puzzle tree gives an interesting Prehistoric feel to and landscape. it's as old as time itself. this tree, in the Auracariaceae family, is a survivor. in its native Chile, it has survived ice storms, great droughts, flooding and thaws through many many centuries. this is a long lived tree, often exceeding 200 years of age. it closely resembles the Candelabra tree (Paranà pine) from southern coastal Brazil.I'm really excited to share some information about this peculiar tree. This coniferous tree, Araucaria Araucana, grows to a mature height of about 30-45 M. It is the hardiest member of its genus and the most well adapted to fluctuating temperatures. Other common names for this tree Piñonero and Pewen. Logging, grazing of the young trees from livestock and bush fires continue to decrease the naturally occurring population of Monkey Trees. They were placed on the endangered tree species list in 2013. They are still widespread in commercial cultivation, but some growing operations lack genetic diversity, when reproduced via clones. This plant has scale like foliage, arranged in a continuous whorl along stems. The scales are 3 to 6 cm. Long from base to tip, and about 3 cm wide. They are lime green while actively growing, and mature to a dark green color. This tree is evergreen. Lateral branches do not branch or fork in their first season, and for the most part extend in a straight line from the base trunk of the tree. As they get heavier and accumulate mass, they dip down slightly, raising up near the tios of the new growing points. The tree crown forms an egg - like shape upon maturity. Leaves should persist on branches for several seasons. Basic care instructions: This plant dioecious, meaning you require a male and a female tree to reproduce them. They bare cones in late summer, with a large amount of pollen emitted in September and October in the northern hemisphere. Seeds are nut - like, and have a hard shell so if you plan on germinating them, I recommend soaking them in warm water overnight, prior to planting. Plans seeds 2 inches below soil surface, or in gallon containers of liners at a similar depth. (Depth measured from top of seed to soil surface). They like well draining soil with a sandy profile. This tree does not reach sexual maturity for a long long time (something to keep in mind). I recommend growing them in full sun conditions and in areas with some wind protection. They dont like having wet feet for prolonged periods of time, in the summer so water deeply but sparingly. (this being said, they LOOOOVE lots of water in the winter)I dont recommend them for containers, they get pot bound quickly and need good aeration for the roots. Conifer fertilizer may be applied in the spring before growing season starts to give plants a slight boost. They are very hardy and fun to see grow. I wish you guys well, thank you for the support!
