Hylands House (Chelmsford)

Hylands House is a neo-classical villa situated within Hylands Park southwest of Chelmsford in Essex. It is owned and operated by Chelmsford City Council. The last private owner lived in Hylands House until her death in 1962. It was in 1966, with the house in need of restoration, that Chelmsford Borough Council purchased the Park for the people of Chelmsford to enjoy. It was agreed by Chelmsford Borough Council that Hylands House should be restored to its former glory and, having stood empty for 20 years, the first phase of restoration took place in 1986. The final stage was completed in September 2005. Every third Sunday of the month Hylands House is open to the public and you can visit the house absolutely free of charge. You can discover more about the history of Hylands House at the monthly exhibition in the library and via the guided tour. Hylands House can be hired for any occasion including Weddings, Celebrations, and Business Events. Even visiting the basement is very exciting. And this cute door leads to a very beautiful rest room. The Hylands Estate Artist Studios located in The Stables is home to a diverse and vibrant community of creatives. In the studios you can see various creative processes, it includes works in progress and exhibitions of finished works of art. Here you can also buy the things you like. 3D printers produce cool toys right before your eyes. Intensive work on restoring the historic landscape of Hylands Park to its 18th-century splendour began in 2004 and was completed in 2007. Today Hylands Estate has 574 acres of parkland open to the public 7 days a week for recreation. When we visited the park, very beautiful tulips were blooming there, but as it is written on the estate’s website, you can see different flowers here at different times of the year. This is a small Lily pond flanked by two oak arbours clad in Wisteria. Central to the Gardens is the beautiful duck pond. Nearly a quarter of the estate is covered in woodland which includes a mix of ancient woods and plantations. These woods are an important part of the landscape, valuable for wildlife. Interestingly, this lake was created as part of the Hylands Estate landscaping works shortly after 1800, and was made to look like a river. It has been recently restored after becoming overgrown with trees and vegetation. The estate is truly huge and we spent a wonderful day here.
