A port on wire-strung lute

A lute with wire strings I have been playing the wire-strung instruments such as orpharion, cittern and English guittar, and I could not resist trying the wires on a standard lute. We have very little historical information regarding the metal-strung lute: Praetorius talks about using wires on the lute in his Syntagma Musicum (1619/20) ending up with the re-entrant tuning like theorbo. There are several surviving liuto(s) converted for the wire strings. In my experiment, I started with 0.13 Malcom Rose’s historical iron and “set up the Treble, so high as you dare venter for breaking”, followed by 0.19 iron for the second, Malcolm’s English brass strings for the middle and self-made twisted brass for the basses. I regulated the bridge and the nut to accommodate the wires. The tension and pitch are much lower than the normal gut-strung instrument anyway. The result was quite interesting and I learned a lot. I will be writing a detailed report with more information for the Lute News or so.
