Director J.M. Harper returns to Sundance, after his 2022 Netflix trilogy "Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy,” with a very different type hip hop documentary, as he explores how the ongoing Young Thug trial is just the latest in a decades long battle of Black artists’ lyrics being used against them in the court room. Harper and the documentary’s two key collaborators/subjects, hip hop artist and professor Erik Nielson (the man who literally wrote the book on the topic), stopped by the IndieWire Studio, presented Dropbox, to discuss what they uncovered as they travelled the U.S. to investigate the subject.
