Powerslave Bass Cover

https://www.buymeacoffee.com/TJH3113 Well the people have spoken and “Powerslave” it is. Powerslave won out 2 to 1 over it’s closest competitor (not that there were hundreds of votes to tally). First, a couple of things. Most people have a few “pet peeves” or things they find personally annoying. I happen to have a wild safari park full of them and one such pet peeve happens to be when people post a video and introduce it with something like this - “Here’s my video. I didn’t play very well and I made a lot of mistakes. The sound is not very good either. I may record it again. Enjoy.” With that being said, here’s my disclaimer. I’ve said before that “I can play fast when I need to…” I usually do best in short bursts as opposed to extended passages. And most of my “speed” is an illusion achieved through the use of triplets, rakes, hammer-ons, pull-offs and other tricks. To ensure that I’d make it to the end of the song, I employed my poor man’s picking technique. Sorry about that. I’ve had no qualms about using that technique in a few of the YES songs I’ve covered but it doesn’t seem as proper in a song that was originally played finger style. Steve Harris is a speed machine with incredible endurance. I am not. One other thing - my bass seems to be tuned a tad flat. It becomes more apparent in the middle/mellow section of the song. Actually, I believe the song is a tad sharp and, once I get on a roll, I tend to go quickly from song to song while I’m recording and sometimes forget to tweak my tuning for certain songs that require tweaking. Enjoy. One thing that I was surprised to learn about Steve Harris' playing (beside the fact that he only plays with 2 fingers, not 3) was that he plays with a fairly light touch. When I was a young player, it sounded as if he was pummeling his poor bass to death. I’ve never been a “metal” guy but liked Iron Maiden when I was young because the bass was so up front and prominent in their music and also because of the horror imagery they employed in their graphics and subject matter of their songs. Any admiration I had for the band was lost when I saw them live on this very tour. It was the worst sounding concert I’ve ever heard and still probably holds that record. And I’ve been to a few lousy sounding shows in my day. The explosive devices being thrown down from the upper level helped me make my mind up to leave after around a half hour or so. The flipped over cars in the parking lot on my way out assured me that I’d made the right decision. If you’d like to see how Iron Maiden is meant to be played you should check out my friend J Huet - WelshPhantom.    / @welshphantom8964   What else? The first runner up was a bit of a surprise - “Pump It Up” by Elvis Costello. I have a nice story to go along with that one. There was a tie for third place between the the two Ozzy songs - Mr. Crowley or Steal Away. I may have to break that tie, unless you guys want to do it for me. I’m pretty sure those songs will earn me a strike against my channel but I’m not too worrie about that. I seem to have beaten Roger Hodgson back for the time being. The Halloween party is over and everything is packed away. I’ve really been looking forward to being able to play a bit more and get back to posting and responding to comments and that sort of thing. Lynn and I are on vacation this week as is usual after the party and I’m looking forward to seeing Al Di Meola tomorrow night at B.B. King’s in Manhattan.
