Phobia Guru Explains The Fear of Toilets

The phobia of toilets does not yet have a title, yet there are still many who suffer from an irrational and debilitating fear of toilets. https://www.phobiaguru.com/the-fear-o... There is a distinct lack of research on this phobia, although a surprising number of people suffer from it or related fears. This phobia encompasses a number of issues relating to going to the toilet including: using public toilets, not having close access to a toilet, having an accident in public, being unable to physically go to the toilet, other people watching or hearing them use the toilet, and getting stuck in a toilet. This links to many other common phobias, such as Mysophobia, a fear of germs, Claustrophobia, fear of small spaces, Emetophobia, fear of vomit, and Coprophobia, the fear of faeces. CAN I BE CURED? Interesting Fact: Research on this phobia has found that up to 32% of the population may be affected by anxiety of fear surrounding the toilet to some degree making a lot more common that one may think. Some research has shown that toilet related fears are more frequent in men. Around 4 million of the UK population (6%) avoid urinating in public toilets as a result of their fears surrounding toilets. Causes: The prominent cause behind Toilet Phobia, is when an individual experiences a traumatic event in their life, whether that be spoiling oneself, getting trapped in a toilet, catching an illness, or bullying in a toilet. This distressing event can lead the victim to associate the context of the event with further occurrences of negative events in this setting. This induces extreme anxiety when encountering the offending object or situation at other times. The severity of toilet phobias can vary between sufferers, and in the most extreme cases it can prevent individuals from leaving the house or travelling at all. Symptoms: The symptoms of toilet phobia are normally worse when the sufferer is in public, and lack privacy. Therefore, symptoms are considerably heightened when the sufferer is in an environment with lots of other people in close proximity to them, in the context of toilets. For example, being in public bathrooms with a large queue would provoke intense feelings of anxiety and make a sufferer feel highly uncomfortable. Particularly for men, using a urinal can cause particular anxiety because of the lack of privacy that it provides. Sufferers can often experience feelings of shame and embarrassment surrounding their toilet issues, and can often be unwilling to admit their fears and seek treatment. As with many phobias, sufferers can experience physical systems as a result of this anxiety such as: butterflies in the stomach, feeling lightheaded, a rapid heart rate, and even crying, trembling or shaking. In more extreme cases, sufferers will avoid any activity that involves them not being in close proximity to a toilet, or where they may be away from the privacy of their own bathroom for a prolonged period of time. Some use medication to ensure that they do not need the toilet when they are out of the house, which can be damaging to one’s health. Others limit their diet drastically to avoid anything which could cause them bowel issues. Why I Should Get Treated: This phobia has a huge impact on day to day activities, as it can prohibit the sufferer from engaging in many activities or events that may require the use of public toilets or the like. This can stop sufferers from being able to visit family, and even harm relationships as others can see them as unsociable or rude as a result of their reluctance to attend events away from home. This can have devastating consequences for those experiencing Toilet Phobia, therefore it is imperative to get treatment for this issue as it can allow sufferers to regain control of their own lives and begin to have more freedom in what they can do.
