It can be more about your actions to keep that person safe and just being present. The process of healing takes time. Often after trauma, there is a period of shock, avoidance, and denial- our own brains try to protect ourselves from having to face and relive that trauma. If they are ready to talk about, express emotions about, or draw pictures about their experiences then we allow it and we sit with them and listen. We remain calm and accepting. It's not our place to force a person to confront what has happened, argue with them about their feelings, or takeover that process except to ensure that they understand that it was not their fault. We can't make any false reassurances, such as "everything is going to be okay", because often, as you know, that road to getting justice has plenty of bumps. You cannot take away their pain or erase the past. But them knowing that you are there to support them the best that you can, reestablishing routines, and connecting them to other supports goes a long way."
