South Lake Tahoe, CA to Glenbrook, NV - VR 360 - 5.7K - Trip Around Lake Tahoe - Part 1

Welcome to one of the cleanest lakes on Earth, Lake Tahoe in California. It is the largest Alpine lake in North America and second deepest lake in the U.S. at 1,645 feet (~501 meters) deep, with Crater lake coming in first at 1,949 feet (~594). When you watch the video, or look at other photos online, you will notice how blue the lake is. Because the lake is so clear due to clean air and water, the water reflects so much crystal clear blue sky. At one point, you can clearly see over 100 feet deep into the lake, but is now at 70 feet due to unchecked land development. Lake Tahoe began its formation 25 million years ago when two parallel faults within the Sierra Nevadas both rose to create mountains, where water filled to create the Lake Tahoe basin. After the last Ice Age less than a million years ago, glaciers slid down the mountains, carving the mountains, creating unique landscapes such as Emerald Bay (Part 4 - coming soon!). Native Americans inhabited Lake Tahoe for over 10,000 years, artifacts confirm. They hunted, fished, and camped the lake, taking advantage of its abundant resources. In 1844, General John C. Fremont discovered the lake, but did not become popular until 1859, when timber was needed for the Comstock Lode mining operation in Virginia City, Nevada (about 36 miles northeast). It is said that around 80 percent of the Lake Tahoe forest was clear cut during this time. Today, there is a deep appreciation and effort to keep Tahoe's natural health alive. The League to Save Lake Tahoe in 1957 was formed and the slogan "Keep Tahoe Blue" is known by many who visit this awe-inspiring landscape.
