What was the basis of Roman religion? What were their beliefs before contact with the Greeks of the Hellenistic kingdoms? The Romans (Republic and Empire) were a polytheistic civilization. People recognized and worshiped multiple gods and goddesses. Despite the presence of monotheistic religions within the ambit of Roman life, such as Judaism and early Christianity, Romans worshipped multiple deities. In this video we look at the different strata of belief in the Roman world: the unique numina (spirits) and IE heritage which characterized pre-Greek belief and the assimilation and Hellenization of later Roman history.
