Derrick May drove in the final run of the ballgame on a sacrifice fly that scored Mark Grace to give the Cubs a 12-10 lead in the eighth. That held up as the final score, but not before two more ejections in the ninth, bringing the total to six for the game. Pirates outfielder Lonnie Smith didn't agree with plate umpire Charlie Reliford's third-strike call and was tossed. Then coach Bill Virdon, filling in for ejected manager Jim Leyland, followed Smith out of the game. But Virdon had to coax Smith to leave the dugout. The umpires wouldn't resume the game until Smith and Virdon left. It was a fitting end to a wild game at Wrigley.
