Ultra-Trail Snowdonia by UTMB 50k 2023 | 55km +3300m

"Beautiful beyond belief, Savage beyond reason." Ultra-Trail Snowdonia by UTMB | 55k, 3300+m | 13.05.23 Skip to the end: Not enough quality training + too strong early effort = cramp. Read on for more... Earlier in the year, due to injury, I'd decided this wouldn't be an 'A' race, but would become part of a wider training block. More recently, when I should be building to peak volume, we've had lots of 'life stuff' to deal with. So approaching this event, I was pretty undercooked but pretty chill. No anxiety, just excitement, and on the start line, I was really happy. Then, the race started. All that chill went out of the window. I went off at what felt like my usual recce pace and hit the first CP right on a predicted time of 2hrs 👌 However, it tuned out that I PR'd most of the Strava segments en route! 😬 So after about 3 hours of effort, I had to stop several times to have a chat with Mr Cramp. On the climb to the South Ridge, he was asking my quads why they stopped doing Spanish squats. Later, he was asking my adductors why they've never done a single Copenhagen. On the Rhyd ddu decsent he wanted to know what happened to the RDLs. We agreed to disagree, and whilst his voice was quieter, he just kept nagging away all day. 40 min slower than predicted time at CP2 😫 it was now about persisting rather than performing. A few litres of fluid later and after the steep climb to Mynydd Mawr, things started to feel better. In fact, although I wasn't chasing it, I actually started making up time again and finished the race with a strong effort all the way from Foel Goch. Some things are more important than others, and 'Life stuff' is always more important than running. One thing our life stuff has taught me is that if all you've got to worry about is being a bit hot and uncomfortable whilst running, on a Sunny day in beautiful #Snowdonia then you haven't got too much to worry about. Dissapointing? Not particularly. If anything, I feel proud of how my body held up, how I managed to get through it all, and finish with Mr Cramp firmly back in his box. Something to build upon. Something to be proud of. #ultratrailsnowdonia • "Beautiful beyond belief" 😍 ✅️ • "Savage beyond reason" 🥵✅️
