If you have written a non-fiction book that's 100 pages or more in length, it could benefit from having an index. An index makes your book more useful to readers and more attractive to potential readers. It can improve both sales and reviews. If you are an indie (self published writer), you are one of a select group if you add an index to your book. Few indies have discovered their importance - unlike traditional publishers, who know full well just how valuable an index is. If you are traditionally published, your publisher is probably insisting on your book having an index - and expecting you to pay for it. As a good, comprehensive index can cost upwards of $1,000, that fact alone may have brought you to this webinar! A good indexer is WELL worth their fee but if you don't have the money it's not going to happen and your book will miss out. If you do add an index, you could see increased sales and reviews. Browsers on Amazon and other book sales sites can preview your print book and see your index. It will make it look more professional and more useful. But should you do it yourself? The truth is, there is quite a precedent for authors indexing their own books. There's no reason why you can't learn how to do it yourself - without needing to buy expensive indexing software.
