In his first world title opportunity, Carlos “King” Palomino took on reigning WBC Welterweight Champion John H. Stracey in Wembley Stadium in the United Kingdom. Both men were 25 years of age at the time of this bout. Prefight records; Palomino 19(9)-1-3, Stracey 44(36)-3-1. In December 1975, Stracey got off the canvas in the first round and rebounded with a stunning TKO6 victory to capture the WBC Welterweight Title from Jose Napoles after causing severe cuts on the legendary Cuban who went on to retire following the defeat. In March 1976, Stracey successfully made the first defense of his title against Hedgemon Lewis via TKO10. For his second defense, he was up against the up and coming Mexico born Californian aiming for Welterweight glory. For the most part, both fighters went toe to toe in an explosive warfare but the defending champion was slightly more effective and ahead in the cards after 6 rounds by utilizing his long right hand and left jab as leads to land pinpoint hooks to the challenger’s head. However, from round 7 on Palomino began to increase the output of his body attacks whilst going upstairs to great effect and in a number of occasions, he snapped back the head of Stracey who often fought back valiantly but unable to dish out the same kind of damage that was dealt against him. In round 12, the accumulation of body blows by Palamino finally took it’s toll on Stracey who hit the deck twice but somehow he was able to get back on his feet both times in a tremendous display of courage. Unfortunately for the dogged Londoner, he was ultimately dethroned when referee Sid Nathan stepped in to halt the contest while he was helplessly flailing on the ropes from the unflinching fusillades of punches by King Palomino who began his reign as the new WBC Welterweight Champion in triumphant fashion. "It was a voluntary defense by Stracey, not a command one, and, to be perfectly honest, we picked what we took to be a competitive, saleable, but least dangerous opponent for Stracey. We were never more wrong." - Mickey Duff (Stracey's matchmaker) Enjoy this highlight of an underrated fight and KING PALOMINO'S ascension to Welterweight glory!
