Zack Snyder's interpretation of the DCEU isn't for everyone, and lord knows it's sparked more controversy than arguably any other mainstream superhero blockbusters in the past decade, but for me, his takes on Superman, Batman, the Justice League are definitive, especially Superman. I was never one for the Man of Steel before the aptly titled 2013 reboot of Superman. He always felt to me like an archetype than a fully three-dimensional character I could relate to or get behind. Prior to Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, I simply found Superman to be boring. However, in 2013, everything changed. Man of Steel is a masterpiece. Christopher Nolan is my favorite filmmaker of all time and he has been ever since I was a kid. TDK trilogy was massively influential for me and my love of cinema, and simply put it revolutionized the way we all collectively view comic book movies. While UNDOUBTEDLY a remarkable visual storyteller - one of if not THE best - he has a distinct penchant for narrative that stems from his own literary introspection, an elevated thinking which allowed him to revolutionize Batman. Then there’s Zack Snyder. I was drawn to Snyder initially by his mastery of film's visual language. He manages to make even a relatively lowkey action something as simple as a game-winning touchdown in a football game feel MASSIVE and epic. Snyder’s strengths are his visuals and however it happened, he discovered THE secret to translating comic book panels to the screen. I was on a MAJOR Snyder kick in high school, I just adored all of his movies, they just stuck with me. For some unexplainable reason, I always wanted Nolan and Snyder to collab on a project, and my wishes came true in 2013, in the form of a masterpiece that not only inaugurated a cinematic universe…it completely changed the way I looked at Clark Kent, and in turn, the way I looked at Superman. What made me realize I love Superman is this weird alchemy when you combine Nolan And Snyder, two filmmakers that feel almost diametrically opposed but when brought together equals the ultimate superhero movie. Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder created something that allowed me to believe in the power of Superman, in the truth and necessity of what he stands for. Now that Henry Cavill is back as Superman, I see no better time to celebrate the masterpiece that is Man of Steel.
