Leo van Doeselaar plays J.S. Bach on the Alkmaar Laurenskerk organ

Johann Sebastian Bach (21 March 1685 — 28 July 1750) Leo van Doeselaar (born 1954, Goes), organist. From an OOP CD published by Fidelio, 1988 0:00 Piece d'Orgue (Fantasie) in G-Dur, BWV 572 9:42 An Wasserlfuessen Babylon, BWV 653 15:04 Christ unser Herr, zum Jordan kam, BWV 684 20:31 Pastorella (Pastorale) in F-Dur, BWV 590 32:41 Praeludium und Fuge in e-moll, BWV 548 48:54 Partite diverse sopra 'Sei gegruesset, Jesu guetig, BWV 768 Organ: 1645 van Hagerbeer / 1725 Schnitger – St. Laurenskerk, Alkmaar, The Netherlands The large organ in the St. Laurenskerk in Alkmaar became known throughout the world in the 20th century through the Bach recordings of blind organist Helmut Walcha. Today it is still considered one of the top Baroque organs in The Netherlands. The building of the organ started in 1639 by Germer Galtuszoon Van Hagerbeer. The case was designed in the same style as the large Van Hagerbeer organ in Leiden which was also being built at the time. This proved too busy for Germer so he had his brother Jacobus and his father Galtus Germer complete the build in Alkmaar. The organ had three manuals, a small pedal (3 stops: 8.4.8.) and 40 stops. The organ was worked on in 1685 and 1704 by the Duyschots. However, organist Gerhardus Havingha (originally from Groningen) wasn’t satisfied with the organ and Frans Casper Schnitger (workshop in Zwolle) was asked to build a new organ in North German style using the old case and many of the old stops. Schnitger used 24 of the old stops (mostly Principals) and added 32 new ones, including an impressive Pedal division of 13 stops and many new reeds stops, the most notable being a Fiool di Gamba. The organ was so different from what traditional Dutch organists were used too, that severe protests came. They couldn’t get used to the equal temperament, large Pedal division, full compass Sexquialters and slider-chests instead of spring-chests. It was to no avail. The Schnitger organ remained and actually meant an end to traditional Dutch organ building. The country was soon flooded with mostly German organ builders including Müller, Bätz, Hinsz, Vater and Garrels. Johannes Strumphler worked on the organ in 1782 and basically gave a number of the old stops a new function in the organ. In all the years, only one stop disappeared completely, and that was the Hoofdwerk Mixture which was replaced by a Cornet in 1854 by C.F.A. Naber. Minor changes took place in the years to follow. The organ was restored in 1949 by Flentrop and again in 1987, when they reconstructed the 1725 situation. In 2014-2015 Flentrop repaired many of the old lead pipes which suffered severe corrosion. Except for the Hoofdwerk Mixture, all stops in the organ contain historical pipework (1645-1782). SPECIFICATION All stops 1645 unless otherwise noted.
