Gibraltar tells Spain to stop long queues or face reciprocal action

The Gibraltar Government is threatening to take reciprocal action at the frontier if Spanish authorities don’t stop the long queues. Lengthy pedestrian delays to get in to Gibraltar this morning have sparked an angry reaction from the Government which says Spanish border authorities have started new passport controls with no warnings. This evening there is also a long delay for cars leaving the Rock. The scanning of a significant number of passports includes Gibraltar red card holders. The office of the Chief Minister says Gibraltar authorities could start checks on cross frontier workers from next week. It says if there is no change from Spain it will not hesitate to implement new passport and ID card scanning. A statement from the Gibraltar Government says that “in the event that no explanation is forthcoming, or that the explanation is unreasonable in all the circumstances, His Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar will act reciprocally, incrementally as from next week.” It adds: “This means that cross frontier workers who are not covered by the Withdrawal Agreement should ensure they have valid travel documents available for inspection on entry into Gibraltar. Those who are covered by the Withdrawal Agreement will have to demonstrate this through the daily provision of valid travel and identity documents also.” The Government says it has already sought clarification from Spain and that the UK will do likewise.
