With this device, Sony is on cruise control, offering incremental changes, but nothing that will blow your socks off. Sony Blu-ray BDP-S6700 Connectivity When it come to connections, Sony keeps it basic with one HDMI port, a digital audio output, an ethernet connection, wi-fi and a USB port on the front. Sony Blu-ray BDP-S6700 Design The body of the BDP-s6700 is all black, with a mix of plastic and metal. There’s nothing special here. Sony Blu-ray BDP-S6700 User Interface Sony has not deviated from its User Interface. The layout of icons is simple and easy to navigate. You can modify your home screen simply by only adding the apps you use. Sony Blu-ray BDP-S6700 Remote The included remote is also the exact same remote model that comes with all other Sony Blu-ray players. You’d think that sony would’ve figured out how to simply the design, considering that most of us only use play back buttons and the navigation pad. Sony TV Side View App An alternative to the included remote, is Sony’s TV Side View App. It is available for Android and iOS devices. In recent iterations of the app the text input doesn’t always work, removing the best benefit of using the app. Sony Blu-ray BDP-S6700 Gaming I like that Sony continues to include the ability to play PS3 games through the Playstation Now service. Bioshock played smoothly enough. With plenty of games available, this could keep you busy. But don’t buy this for someone who considers themselves a gamer. The BDP-S6700 is not a replacement for the latest gaming consoles. Sony Blu-ray BDP-S6700 Performance As a blu-ray disc player, a Playstation Now gaming system and a streaming device this gets the job done on an HD TV, but even with 4K upscaling, there are more feature-rich options available. If you are looking for something that offers UHD Blu-ray playback, consider the Samsung UBD-K8500. It is currently selling for less than $200. Sony BDP-S6700 Streaming When it comes to streaming, it has all of the typical streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Video, but I was disappointed that Sony does not offer their own Playstation Vue Internet television service. Wrap UP For years, Sony Blu-ray players have offered the best home movie watching experience, combining the high quality of Blu-ray disc and the ease of streaming, but as Ultra HD becomes the new normal and other streaming devices offer Ultra HD for lower prices, it is time to move on. This device is fine if you need something to play your Blu-ray collection, but if you want Ultra HD resolution, I recommend either the Samsung UBD-K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray or the Roku Ultra streaming device.
