Lot F158: 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T, from The Wayne Schmeeckle Collection ESTIMATE: $250,000 - $325,000 Website: https://www.mecum.com/lot-detail/FL01... The opportunity this one-of-one 426 Hemi Challenger R/T from the Wayne Schmeeckle collection offers is rare and unique and it will likely make one person very happy and leave the under-bidders with a sense of regret. This Hemi Challenger R/T is documented with the original broadcast sheet, earned O.E. Bronze certification at Mopars at the Strip in Las Vegas and combines some of the rarest go-fast options ever installed on an E-Body. One of the scarcest options on any 1970 Challenger regardless of engine choice is the Shaker hood; this was because the factory had to discontinue its installation for a good part of the 1970 model run due to structural issues found in testing. The car here is believed to be the only documented Plum Crazy Hemi 4-speed Challenger R/T with Shaker hood and Super Track Pak. The Shaker scoop bolted directly to the engine and could be seen by the occupants of the car through the windshield thanks to a pentastar-shaped hood opening. Atop the Hemi engine, with its somewhat rumbling cam timing and large dimensions, the ominous twin-opening blister quivered in anticipation at idle. It torqued slightly to the left when under hard acceleration, but nobody was paying attention; they were hanging on for dear life. Meanwhile, the car itself is decked in code-FC7 Plum Crazy, a High Impact Paint color that was an extra-cost option some years. Since the original buyer opted for 15-inch steel wheels, this same color was carried over to them, with the whole vehicle offset by a contrasting black vinyl roof and black longitudinal stripe. The Shaker itself is painted Argent Silver, with other brightwork including pie-pan hubcaps, deluxe trim moldings, hood pins and 426 Hemi callouts on the Shaker. The Hemi requires no introduction; it was at its zenith for street tune in 1970 thanks to minor internal changes. Matched perfectly behind the 425 HP dual 4-barrel engine is an A833 4-speed transmission, part of the A34 Super Track Pak option that was all business—4.10:1 Dana 60 differential, better cooling pieces and power front disc brakes. Even coupled with the wide raised white-letter G60-15 Goodyear Polyglas rubber, this car could obliterate the tires at will with this combo. Inside, black vinyl buckets, a Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, rim-blow steering wheel and in-dash tachometer are among the accoutrements that greet the driver. During the comprehensive refreshing of this vehicle, the small details were sweated and fit and finish are telling. Inside and out, this Challenger R/T is amazing in its beauty. The Hemi-powered Challenger was only offered for sale for two model years, 1970-71. Even then, few buyers were willing to pay the increased insurance premium being added to many muscle models. That rarity, added to this car’s stunning appearance, one-of-one options and higher-than-ever modern demand, makes this Challenger R/T being offered here among the finest Hemi cars available at Kissimmee.
