To me, the words of the song describe a whaling vessel which ropes a live ‘right’ (Wright) whale 🐋 ,which then pulls the ship around the ocean endlessly. Because the captain will not cut the whale loose, the ship must submit to being controlled by the whale with no finite end to the ship's mission. Only the suspense of waiting and hoping. To me, the chorus seems to speak of wishing the whaling company (The Wellerman) will 'soon' bring the sailors some comfort by way of sugar and tea and rum and wishing the whole affair was finished so they could take their leave and go.
