Horse-head fiddle player B. Bayarsaikhan performing in a rural Mongolian ger

This is a video I shot of B. Bayarsaikhan performing a folk composition composed for the Mongolian horse-head fiddle (morin khuur). Bayarsaikhan is a master fiddle maker as well as performer, and while he often plays his own fiddles, during this visit to a friend's household in Arhangai province, he is using the horse-head fiddle owned by the head of the household. It's common for Mongolian families in rural central Mongolia to own a horse-head fiddle. And to perform a tune on a family's fiddle is considered a very respectful act for visitors, like us, to do. As you'll hear, this is an informal musical performance. The family is gathered around the sides of the ger (yurt), and you'll hear the sounds of people talking, dogs barking, the mother of the household making dinner, and even an ill-timed cell phone call. We may be deep in the Mongolian countryside, but we're still not out of cell phone range! This video was shot during my most recent fieldwork trip to Mongolia in summer 2011.
