Fall from Grace: Exposing Buffalo's Predator Priests and Complicit Bishops

For years, the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo was painted as the rare exception to the issue of clergy sexual abuse. We never had that problem here, bishops said. That facade began to crumble in March when a Buffalo man first told about sexual abuse at the hands of Fr. Norbert Orsolits, who shocked parents by admitting he abused "dozens" of boys. Investigative news stories by Chief Investigator Charlie Specht and Photojournalist Jeff Wick revealed a trail of human wreckage left by serial predators like Fr. James Spielman. The diocese was forced to release a list of 42 priests who sexually abused kids. But the 7 Eyewitness News I-Team didn't stop there. In May, we published internal documents showing a succession of four bishops knew of the abuse -- and shuffled around priests to other churches, where they found unsuspecting altar boys and girls on which to prey. Then on Holy Week, we broke the story which proved it wasn't just a problem of the past: Fr. Dennis Riter was the first active pastor to be removed after we published stories outlining his abuse. Fourteen more active priests would soon go on to be removed from the altar. The bombshell came in August, when we exclusively tied the cover-up of sexual abuse to the sitting Bishop of Buffalo. Damning documents from a confidential source were the basis for our three-part series on Bishop Richard J. Malone, which showed that Malone returned an accused child abuser to ministry after a previous bishop removed him, allowed another abusive priest to remain pastor of a wealthy parish despite multiple abuse allegations, and deceived the faithful by hiding the "real" abuse list -- containing 106 priests -- from the public. It was likely the largest breach of documents from the "secret archives" in the history of the American church -- and as a direct result of our reporting, more than a half dozen local leaders and elected officials called for Bishop Malone to resign; the State Attorney General has launched a statewide investigation into clergy sexual abuse and national media outlets like CNN and "60 Minutes" are crediting the groundbreaking reporting of the 7 Eyewitness News I-Team for beginning stories of their own. "You have given voice to victims who never had a voice," one man wrote to us this month. "I feel like someone finally listened and has stuck up for me for the first time ever." "I have two children," a mother in Buffalo wrote. "I appreciate knowing and pray for the harmed. Big institutions must be held accountable."
